Shrewsbury was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 22, 1926, from portions of Shrewsbury Township), based on the results of a referendum held on May 11, 1926. Shrewsbury was the birthplace of explorer and writer John Lloyd Stephens.
